UPDATE: One man dead, cop hurt in Toronto-area courthouse shooting

Ontario's police watchdog has confirmed a man is dead following a shooting at a Toronto-area courthouse which also sent an officer to hospital.

The Special Investigations Unit says the incident happened at 11 a.m. when a man entered the Brampton, Ont., courthouse and discharged a firearm "reportedly injuring'' a Peel region police officer.

The SIU says there was then an interaction between Peel police officers and the man during which an officer discharged his firearm and the man was struck and has been pronounced dead.

The SIU says it has assigned fifteen investigators and three forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of the incident.

A police officer at the scene tells The Canadian Press that the injured officer had been rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.

The courthouse building remains under lockdown.
