Square-Victoria metro station to be renamed

The change isn't dramatic, but the Square-Victoria metro station is having its name changed.

The downtown station in the city's financial district it going to have the acronyms of the UN's International Civil Aviation Organization appended to its name.

Square-Victoria will be renamed to Square-Victoria-OACI, and the signage will be changed by the end of June.

The decision was made by the STM's council Wednesday.

And when will Montreal be changing the name of the Lionel Groulx Metro? Surely Montreal does not need to honour a racist. How about honouring Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King, Jr. or some other who fought AGAINST racists?

@Ian How about just a notable African-Canadian Montrealer like Oscar Peterson?

@Ian Because they have English names.

Interesting to note that the LEAD language for ICAO, and the international language of aviation, is ENGLISH.

The OCAI acronym is likely only known to OQLF hardliners and is, therefore, meaningless.

Given the PQ stance on the English language (and the stance of some non-PQ Quebeckers), it is unfortunate that the pur laine cannot work at ICAO since the ONE mandatory language required for employment is ENGLISH.

Such are the trials facing the discriminated-against unilingual francophone who continue to support the PQ.

    King ?
    Are you kidding ?
Too English sounding, can't have that, now can we !?

It doesn't matter what you name it here, the rest of the world-- The UN --knows it as "ICAO". This is another waste of tax payer money.

Martin Luther King, Jr? Seriously? We're not in the states and that's so common.

@Max Malcolm X would make more sense for Montreal since his parents met here.

I'm sure the sign maker will be happy to sell these 4 letters, but how about putting them in the right order?

Besides, does the AMT/STM REALLY have money to flush? I seem to recall that they still need automobile drivers to subsidise their operations, so how about asking whether WE agree to this extravagance?

Good call. We are very lucky to have this organization here in Montreal.
