A PQ member who crudely described the Liberal party as a bunch of crooks and mocked new Liberal MNA Gaétan Barrette's weight is being widely criticized across the province's political spectrum.

Marc Laviolette is the riding president for Beauharnois and an ex-president of the CSN. He made the comments Monday night as the PQ was suffering its stunning political defeat.

Among those denouncing the comments were Gilles Duceppe, Bernard Landry and the CSN.

Libreral leader Philippe Couillard also said the comments didn't belong in politics.

"People who use that kind of language disqualify themselves from public life,"
 he said when informed of the comments yesterday.

And CJAD political analyst Jean Lapierre said Laviolette had no class and no respect for democracy.

"There's a limit," he said. "If you attack a person on his physical appearance, if you attack a whole party by saying they're all crooks - there's a limit. And I think he's gone overboard."

Laviolette has since apologized,

    He should resign and if he refuses, the PQ should demand his resignation. There is no other acceptable path to take, an apology is insufficient.

      @Barcham That's a good one!
      You seem to forget this party, that we are dealing with.

    What's the big surprise? Why does the PQ "braintrust" suddenly find Laviolette more offensive than Mailloux? Remember Louise Mailloux whom Pauline Marois defended, a Parti Quebecois candidate who compared baptism and circumcision to rape,
    who ran for the PQ in the Montreal riding of Gouin, who has also written in the past that a tax on kosher and halal foods helps to fund religious wars.
    Why the tacit approval of Mailloux and the "outrage" over Laviolette. I hope it's not just because he was offensive to "pure" Quebecers and she was merely spewing at "others"

    Laviolette obviously has a very open mind. It is too bad that it is sooo open that his brain fell out.

    If he does no resign fine, But its up the PQ to show the people they are not a bunch of racist rednecks and show him the door, but they will not because they have all adopted the Marois giggle. But votes are votes and this clown still carries some weight in the unions and a lot of the clans votes come from that area and people of this mentality so they will blow it off until the next election or by election to show the unions they are on their side.

    Odd. He looks like he's carrying more than his own fair share of body mass. Typical PQ though. They repeatedly fail to learn that if one lives in a glass house one shouldn't throw stones.

    ok...let's just imagine that everything he said is true...that the Liberals are all crooks and Gaétan Barrette is too obese to be in politics. What does that say about the PQ if they still lost? ;)
