Laval preps for possible flooding

Authorities in Laval are closely watching the Riviere des Prairies and Milles Iles river as rainfall and snowmelt are expected to swell the two rivers.

After a night in which water levels stabilized, they believe they will rise some more in the next hours and days.

In some places the water has already overflowed its banks. The ducks and geese were enjoying the extra few dozen feet of water the swollen Milles Iles river has already spilled over.

Laval police say they are preparing for any eventuality as water from the Ouataouais river and melting ice here add to already high water levels.

But they say they are not anticipating major flooding nor any evacuations.

Residents like Suzanne - she didn't want to giver her last name - don't seem overly concerned.

She and others say they've seen worse in years past

"I've lived in the area for 30 years and come by this area almost every day, and often the water levels are much higher," she said.

But with more rain in the forecast, police say they are taking all the necessary precautions.
