Man barricades himself in his east end apartment

A stretch of Sherbrooke Street East in Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve was closed Thursday morning as police looked for a man they believed was armed and barricaded in his apartment.

Police were called to the apartment building at the corner of Sherbrooke and Joffre Streets at around 7 a.m. after a man stabbed his neighbor in the hand during an altercation.  On the scene neighbors told police the suspect might have a firearm.

They surrounded his apartment for almost 2 hours, but once inside, the suspect was gone.

“Police officers checked inside the building, the suspect wasn’t located so investigators will get the necessary warrants to try to find if there is a firearm in the building,” Constable Daniel Lacoursière said.

The suspect is known to police. They believe he was intoxicated.
