Children playing in an open manhole.

It's not something many Montrealers would think would be a problem in this city - but a Hochelaga Maisonneuve man says it is and wants his borough to do something about it.

Lasana Joseph tells CTV he spotted a group of kids playing in an open sewer over the weekend.

The sewer was covered over by public works employees late Monday afternoon but Joseph says this isn't the only open sewer he's seen in his neighborhood, adding it's an accident waiting to happen.

"I have seen this too many times, too many times, and I`ve seen worse. I`ve seen in the middle of the street, open and just a couple of pieces of wood, like an X basically, where anyone, I can fall through." he tells CTV News.

Nice to see a citizen go out of his way to protect the children . The city is too stupid to do the job properly so it is up to private citizens to tell them what precautions should be taken. Nice job Mr. Joseph.

Mr. Joseph mentioned he saw children playing in it over the weekend, Is he the only one to have seen this danger and to have called it in. How many have seen it and just walked on by, in this day and age we all have mobile phones, it's a 3 digit number to call the City ( 3 -1 - 1 ), is it to hard to do. Shame to those who don't give a _ _ _ _,

I want to Know how long the city was informed about it, and why it took media coverage for the city officials to dispatch a team of workers in order to secure an open manhole, late on a Monday afternoon, when the city has employees working on weekend shift .

We need more citizens like Mr. Joseph.
