Police bust up smokes smuggling ring

A big police sweep centering on the contraband cigarette trade is underway this morning.

400 officers are staging raids in Montreal, on the South Shore and in Akwesasne near Cornwall.

Provincial police say the smuggling of smokes was overseen by members of the mob and aboriginal organized crime.

The force is not yet saying how many search and arrest warrants are being executed this morning. Reporters will get more detail at a media briefing at 10:30 a.m.
