Lasalle Hospital patient finally gets to see neurologist after nine-week wait

A woman whose sick father has been waiting to see a neurologist since early April says he is finally getting the treatment he desperately needs.

Joyce Crandall reached out through YOUR STORY at CJAD.COM last week saying that her 69-year-old father James had been at the ICU at Lasalle hospital with double pneumonia as he waited for a transfer to either the Royal Victoria Hospital or the Montreal Neurological Institute.

But an apparent communication breakdown left him in medical limbo for weeks.

Joyce Crandall initially blamed the MUHC for the delay in transferring her father.

But the MUHC says it never got a transfer request from Lasalle.

Doctors at Lasalle told Crandall they blamed bad communication on their part for the delay.

Crandall says the situation was eventually corrected.

"The doctor at Lasalle, I have to say, was one of the first ones that actually seems to have done something," she said. "He said he would make it happen. He left on Sunday but he made sure [the transfer request] was in place."

She says she is still angry that what she thought was a routine visit turned into a months-long ordeal.

"We were just going in for a quick check and we thought everything would be fine," she said. "And now, after what we went through in the past nine weeks? Never again."

She plans to meet with hospital brass to discuss what went wrong.

"What we went through was unacceptable."
