Authorities in south shore Beloeil are keeping an eye out for a bear that was spotted early this morning in someone's backyard.
Police there say it was spotted around 4:30 this morning behind a home on Leclerc St. About a dozen police officers are currently in the neighborhood, trying to track down the animal.
Beloeil police have also called in officials from the province's wildlife protection service to help out with the search. If and when they find the bear, it will be put to sleep and taken away.
An official with the service, Gilles Chiasson, tells the Journal de Montreal that bear sightings in residential neighborhoods are extremely rare — and suggests it may have wandered into the residential neighborhood because it was hungry.
"It's a springtime habit for bears to drift into urban areas," Chaisson tells the paper. "Food is scarce and fruits haven't come out yet. It's an animal looking for easy food, which he can find in these areas."
