Concern over emergency response times in Plateau

The fire department and the union representing Urgence Sante ambulance technicians say new traffic calming measures planned for the Plateau, are going to make a difficult situation even more difficult and they worry that emergency response times will increase as a result.

Plateau Mayor Luc Ferrandez has announced plans to add 20 km of bicycle paths, reduce the width of some streets and build traffic islands at some busy intersections.

Two streets, Mentana and Saint -André, will become designated bicycle routes where only local traffic will be permitted to circulate.

The fire department and ambulance union say they should have been consulted.

They clashed with the Fernandez back in 2011, when the Mayor introduced traffic calming measures that included speed bumps, which firefighters say caused them to slow their trucks when responding to fires.

I've sat in meaningless traffic jams in the Plateau Mt Royal near Hôpital Hotel Dieu while fire trucks and ambulances honked and wailed and the cars had no where to go to get out of the way because of unnecessarily narrowed lanes and badly synchronized traffic lights and directions. This is not traffic calming and the use of this term should be restricted to actual traffic calming. This is traffic impeding and a badly thought out attempt at social engineering. I get it . Fewer cars would be good BUT this is dangerous and unpleasant for those in traffic, emergency vehicles and , I assume, those who live on the streets that have been sacrificed for those who live on the actually calmed streets. I wouldn't want to be a cyclist on those potholed bike paths that are painted between the parked cars and the busses and cars either.

The fire department and ambulance union clashed with the mayor in 2011 over traffic calming measures that included speed bumps, which firefighters say caused them to slow their trucks when responding to fires!!!???!!! Who in their right mind would side with a mayor against these real heroes over something so purely about public safety ???!!! This isn't about wages, hours, pensions, or budgets ! Who IS this mayor serving? We know what the firefighters and first responders do for society. They DO serve and protect. OUTRAGEOUS
