The fire department and the union representing Urgence Sante ambulance technicians say new traffic calming measures planned for the Plateau, are going to make a difficult situation even more difficult and they worry that emergency response times will increase as a result.
Plateau Mayor Luc Ferrandez has announced plans to add 20 km of bicycle paths, reduce the width of some streets and build traffic islands at some busy intersections.
Two streets, Mentana and Saint -André, will become designated bicycle routes where only local traffic will be permitted to circulate.
The fire department and ambulance union say they should have been consulted.
They clashed with the Fernandez back in 2011, when the Mayor introduced traffic calming measures that included speed bumps, which firefighters say caused them to slow their trucks when responding to fires.
