UPDATE: Father, son die in fatal train-car crash

The Surete du Québec says a 42 year old man, Thierry Patenaude Turcotte and his one year old son, Nicolas Patenaude are dead after their car was struck by a Via Rail passenger train at a level crossing.

The incident took place in St-Liboire, east of Saint-Hyacinthe.

A Via spokesman says the barriers were down at the crossing and that the lights were flashing.

Police say the car was cut in two.

A police spokeswoman says authorities are not ruling out the possibility the driver deliberately positioned his car at the crossing.

    I feel it important to remind people, not to stop on railroad crossings. It’s stupid. Once the light start flashing you may have as little 20-30 seconds to get off the track. If you can’t move your vehicle off the track, do you think 30 seconds is enough to get yourself, and your two kids in the back out of their car seats, and away from the car?
