Severe thunderstorm watch in effect

Montreal, Laval, Châteauguay, La Prairie, Longueuil - Varennes

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Montreal area.

Forecasters say conditions will remain favorable for the development of "dangerous thunderstorms" for the rest of the day — thunderstorms "capable of producing strong wind gusts and torrential rain."

"Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches," the statement from Environment Canada reads. "Stay indoors when a thunderstorm strikes. There isn't a place outside that is safe during a thunderstorm. Stay away from all windows, skylights and doors. In Canada, lightning kills up to 10 people every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors."

The warning is in effect for Montreal, Laval, the Châteauguay-La Prairie area, and the Longueuil-Varennes area.
