Man suspected of killing mother and child in court today

A 36-year-old man is facing two counts of first-degree murder, and several other criminal charges, in connection with the discovery of the bodies of a 37-year-old woman and her 5-year-old son in the Lower St. Lawrence community of Routhierville Monday.

Christian Chabot, a Montreal resident, appeared before a judge in Rimouski today. He returns to court on June 19.

Chabot had once dated the 37-year-old victim, Michelle Clusiau, and was not allowed to be near her 5-year-old son Mathieu Clusiau Perron. In September, he pleaded guilty to assaulting the child.

He was sentenced to a day in jail and three years' probation.

The bodies were found in an abandoned blue 1994 Dodge Shadow that had been reported stolen earlier in the day in Laval, and was driven some 700 kilometres during the day.

Shortly before arriving in Routhierville, it was involved in a hit-and-run accident.

1-day in jail and 3 years probation??? Wow, judge, you didn't put much thought into your ruling. Hopefully you won't sleep well at night for a long long time. This mom and her little boy will be sleeping for a long time now because of your ridiculous sentence. These abusers have to be taught that the law is serious and not just a pretend game. It's almost as if these lenient sentences are given because the judges are afraid to make them too severe in case one day they're accused of doing the same thing and don't want to spend too much time in jail. Other example: drinking a driving. Abuse in not being taken seriously enough. Can you imagine the terror they must have been put through before he was sentenced to a whole day in jail. Did he get his pizza and fries while in jail? I'm sure his rights were protected. What about the mother and child's rights. Our legal system is SICK!
