Quebec loses track of fugitive

Belgium may not be pleased that authorities here in Quebec have lost track of an international fugitive after granting him bail.

Francis Weitz was arrested here last year at the request of Belgian police. He is a diamond merchant and is suspected of stealing millions of dollars worth of gems from his contacts in the industry.

A judge decided that Weitz could be released pending his extradition hearing, providing he surrender his passports, live with a friend who posted $25,000 dollars bail and regularly check in with the Mounties.

La Presse reports that those check-ins stopped in May and authorities admit they have no idea where Weitz is now.
