An explosion at a chemical plant in the community of Bécancour near Trois-Rivières will not cause any lasting environmental damage.

The Olin Chlor Alcali plant on Alphones-Deshaies Blvd. in the town's industrial park produces chlorine, hydrochloric acide and sodium hydroxide.

Witnesses report a dark yellow cloud of chlorine gas rising from the plant at around 11:30 Wednesday morning.

One man was overcome by the gas, but is expected to make a full recovery.
