Firefighters banish Coderre

Denis Coderre is persona non grata at fires and other emergencies from now on.

The Mayor likes to put on a firefighter's coat and helmet and visit the scene of a fire from time to time to show support for fire victims and appreciation for the work that firefighters do.

But, the firefighters don't appreciate the stance he's taken concerning their pension plans.

The president of the union,Ronald Martin, has published an open letter to the mayor asking him not to show up when they are at work any more because of the Mayor's support for Bill 3, which will reform the pension plans of municipal workers in Quebec.

The law would mandate municipalities and public service unions to share the cost of pension deficits.

Martin says Coderre's whole-hearted support for the legislation is at odds with what he had told the union during the election campaign last fall.

Didn't take long for the honeymoon to end with the new mayor. Word of advice to Mayor Coderre, focus on reducing our property taxes, improve services, fix the pot holes, clean up the city, get rid of the tons of layers at city hall, and stop being such a media hog!!!

If the unions do not like the Mayor then I love the Mayor. I would eliminate defined pensions all together if I was in charge!!!!

Actually, I'm probably not alone among normal citizens, in believing that firefighters are an exceptional group of municipal workers and deserve to be treated differently than the others. They are highly skilled and risk their health and lives regularly on our behalf and unlike ALL of the others, they do this without thought of whom they are helping or why. They just help us all no matter what we are or who we are or our social, political, financial position or our cultural group etc. Give them their promised pensions and even more. They are the only real heroes among anybody in the public service. There is no corruption. They work hard and are on call for all of us. Can't say the same about any other group in the public service. We work for them unfortunately and not the other way around.
