Royal Vic's pool to sit empty this summer

The swimming pool behind the Royal Victoria Hospital is being closed for the summer—and the impending move to the McGill University Health Network superhospital next year has something to do with it.

MUHC communications coordinator Ian Popple says the pool, often touted as a 'hidden gem' by bloggers for its location and the scenery, is being closed for practicality reasons.

"The decision was taken to not open the Royal Victoria Hospital pool this year because all available resources are being used in the preparation for the transfers of the Royal Victoria Hospital, the [Montreal Chest Institute] and the Montreal Children's Hospital to the [superhospital] site,"

The Royal Vic's pool bore witness to a fatal incident last summer, when a 77-year-old man was pulled unconscious from the pool.

He died at the Royal Vic the next day.
