Jean Garon dead at 76

Former cabinet minister Jean Garon has died at the age of 76.

He died yesterday at the hospital in the Quebec City suburb of Levis. The cause of death has not been divulged.

He made his name on the provincial scene as agriculture minister in the Parti Quebecois governments of Rene Levesque and Pierre Marc Johnson.

Most notably, he was responsible for the creation of the 1978 law on the protection of farmland.

Garon also served as mayor of Levis for many years.
