Lac-Mégantic tourism project draws praise, concerns

An ambitious project designed to revitalize downtown Lac Mégantic is being proposed by a group of Quebec businessmen.

The project includes hotels, a cinema and even a light and sound show.

Groupe Action Mégantic's members say they are tired of waiting for the provincial government to open its purse strings and release much needed reconstruction funds for the devastated town.

They say their project, which would draw heavily on last year's tragedy, can draw thousands of tourists and generate an estimated half-a-billion dollars in economic activity.

GAM's David Sepulchre believes tourism can be the town's saviour.

There are worries among locals, however, that the project is in poor taste, and that the new developments will alter the town's character while snapping up prime downtown real estate.

Others support the project, saying the town needs the money.

Why can't the media and the public leave these people alone? Do we want to turn these people into a freak show?
