Lottery winner vows to fight tax man

A Loto 6/49 winner who landed a $10-million jackpot a number of years ago says Revenue Quebec is trying to ruin his life.

Howard Pashlin of Dollard says soon after his big win in 1999, he was warned by his accountant and lawyers that he'd be closely monitored by the taxman for the rest of his life.

After one encounter with Revenue Quebec a couple of years ago, Pashlin acknowledged that he owed $100,000 and made arrangements to pay.

Now Revenue Quebec is going after him for nearly a million dollars and Pashlin has insisted to CJAD that he does not owe that amount.

He says the tax office mistakenly classified as revenue third-party cheques that moved through his bank account between 2008 and 2010 - money that was returned to an acquaintance as soon as the cheques cleared.

Pashlin says he has informed Revenue Quebec that he has affidavits from all parties involved but the auditors seem unwilling to take them into account.

He is now considering litigation.

Clearly with all the bad and shaddy business in Quebec The revenue people have to go after the innocent lottery winners. How bout they go after all the companies that cheated them out of millions of tax dollars or all those city workers/executives that took money from public coffers. This province is slowly going to sh** and there is not one party truly willing to clean it up. Lets just put a bandaid on it rather then start a new.

But what was the purpose of the third party cheques that passed through his account? If they were loans as this story implies, then he should have obtained written agreements from the third parties. If not then it is up to him to prove the source and purpose of that money. Until proof is provided, Revenu Quebec is not at fault here.
