Spotty attendance at Montreal council meetings

The mayor, the leader of the official opposition and two dozen other members of Montreal council may have perfect attendance records but others are much spottier.

The worst attendance record since the last election belongs to Plateau Mont Royal borough mayor Luc Ferrandez. The Projet Montreal member has missed or been late for nearly half of the 25 meetings, without providing a valid excuse.

Other council members whose attendance has been irregular: Luis Miranda, who has missed or been late for a third of meetings; Jeremy Searle who has been absent or late for 32-percent of the city hall sessions; and Andree Henault, who has missed 20-percent of meetings.

The attendance numbers were compiled by the Journal de Montreal.

How many regular jobs could you keep with that type of work ethics.

I can't believe the people keep electing Luc Ferrandez. He's clearly not the man for the job and his attendance record proves it, it's no wonder the Plateau is a mess with outrage parking fees and highest "vignet" residential annual parking on the island!! He doesn't have a clue what to do...

Attendance figures at Montreal Council Meetings should be made public so that we can see if those we voted for are doing their job. We the public voted for them and it would be nice to see if we voted for someone who actually wanted to represent us or just one looking for some extra money without doing anything.

As a Plateau Mont Royal resident, if my tax bills weren't rising significantly every year, if my sidewalks were clear of snow, if the traffic congestion and idling car pollution and noise on St. Urbain wasn't significantly worse than before traffic calming, if parking permits hadn't doubled in price, if there were parking places for visitors and shoppers and St. Laurent boulevard wasn't becoming a street of failed and closed businesses and double parked trucks, if pedestrian crosswalk laws and moving violations were enforced etc etc, I wouldn't care that our borough mayor Luc Ferrandez has missed or been late for nearly half of the 25 meetings, without providing a valid excuse. No excuse would be needed if the job was getting done.

Perhaps, Mr.Ferrandez was too busy blocking off streets to attend City meetings.

Presumably each council member is paid for each meeting they attend and if they dont, they dont get paid. I wonder if they are still getting paid to not attend meetings because its complicated for civil servants to sort out?

In the private sector, individuals are given an allowance for vacation. Usually 3-4 weeks depending on seniority. On the assumption that Montreal council meetings are weekly, this would equate to a maximum of four missed meetings per year. Anything more than that and councillors should be sanctioned with a pay deduction. Tax payers shouldn't be on the hook for councillors that have other things to do.

So, since everybody agrees that this guy is a slacker how does he keep getting re-elected?
