Former councillor convicted in Chateauguay bribery case

A former city councillor in Chateauguay is going to jail for trying to bribe the mayor.

Real estate agent Rene Lafrance admitted that he offered cash to Mayor Nathalie Simon if she agreed to appoint him Chateauguay's director of economic development.

Instead of accepting the offer, Simon went to police and helped them gather evidence in the case. At one point, Lafrance gave the mayor $30,000 in an envelope, promising more to finance her next election campaign if the appointment was forthcoming.

Investigators say Lafrance wanted the city job so he'd have a hand in contracting and be privy to information that might benefit himself and some pals.

Lafrance has been sentenced to 30 months in jail.
