Update: arson suspected in two overnight fires

Fire at 4527 St-Denis Street

It was a busy overnight for the Montreal fire department, as well as the Montreal arson squad.

At 2:15 a.m., residents called 9-1-1 about a man setting fire to the Vétiver bar on St-Denis street north of Jarry.  Investigators believe an arsonist smashed the front window, then tossed a molotov cocktail into the building.  The flames quickly spread throughout the first floor.

“Firefighters evacuated surrounding buildings and the fire is contained to the main buildings,” said Luc Galarneau of the Montreal Fire Department.

The investigation has been transferred to the arson squad.

Second fire near Mont-Royal

A second fire erupted around 4:00 a.m. at 4527 St-Denis Street between Mont-Royal and Bienville.

This was the second fire in recent months in the unoccupied building.   Over 60 firefighters were called to battle the blaze.

The fire department says a gasoline canister was found in the debris.
