Montreal billionaire David Azrieli dies

Canadian-Israeli billionaire real estate tycoon and philanthropist David Azrieli died on Wednesday at the age of 92.

Among his holdings is Montreal’s Sofitel Hotel on Sherbrooke Street. His properties here are managed by his firm Canpro Investments.

Azrieli also owns shopping malls, office towers, hotels and other properties in Canada and Israel.

Azrieli indirectly prompted the creation of the heritage preservation group Save Montreal when he bought the historic Van Horne Mansion in downtown Montreal in 1973 and sent in bulldozers in the middle of the night to demolish it.

In recent years, he and his wife divided their time between homes in Westmount and Israel.
