A cyclist in his forties is in a medically induced coma after being struck by a car at the intersection of Van Horne at Decarie Boulevard.

The accident happened shortly after 10:00 o'clock Sunday night.

The cyclist was heading westbound on Van Horne and was crossing Decarie when the motorist travelling north blew the red light and hit him.

"No alcohol, no speed are involved in this accident," said Cst. Raphael Bergeron with Montreal police. "It could be a distraction that led the driver of the vehicle to pass through the red light."

Experts spent hours reconstructing the scene, and the driver of the vehicle was questioned by investigators.

"The reason why we can say the car driver went through a red light is different witnesses that we had a chance to meet shortly after the incident confirmed that information," Bergeron said.

Photos taken after the accident show the driver side of the windshield smashed.
