Giraffe hits head on bridge and dies during truck ride in Johannesburg

A giraffe has died after hitting its head on a bridge while being transported on a truck in Johannesburg, South Africa.

It was one of two giraffes on the truck travelling on the city's N1 motorway.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal said one died on arrival after both animals were taken to a vet.

The condition of the other giraffe wasn't known.

The vehicle wait several hours to be repaired after it broke down.

Thinus Botha tweeted he had been driving behind the truck when the animal struck its head on Garsfontein Bridge.

He added there was "lots of blood".

The animals were said to be headed to a game farm in Warmbarths, about 160km outside Johannesburg.

An autposy was expected.

    What a disgrace.... These animals are supposed to be protected!!! Not to be funny of anything, didnt they think ahead and learn from the scene in "The Hangover"....RIP innocent angel....

    Sounds like a skit out of a Cheech & Chong movie. The driver must have been higher that the giraffe!
