"Couple Maudit" convict wins release

The Quebec man who together with his girlfriend was known as the "Couple Maudit" is being paroled.

Denis Frechette is 54 now.

In the summer of 1988, when he was a drug addict and alcoholic, he and Pierrette Anglehart abducted and sexually tortured six women, killing one of them: 40-year old Rhea Brochu. She was abducted from a shopping centre parking lot in Pointe-aux-Trembles.

The two were both given life sentences with no chance of parole for 25 years.

Anglehart died of cancer several years ago.

In giving Frechette his freedom, the Parole Board noted that he has been sober for more than 20 years, and has been married for 17 years to a woman he met while behind bars.

He board also noted that Frechette has expressed remorse for what he did and has prepared for life on the outside by finding work.
