Hydro Quebec asks for yet another rate increase

A 3.9% increase — on top of this year's 4.3% hike

Hydro Quebec is asking the Quebec Energy Board for yet another rate increase — this time, a 3.9 per cent increase which would take effect in April of 2015.

The utility got a 4.3 per cent increase which took effect this April — when they had originally demanded a 5.8 per cent increase from the Board.

Hydro says more than half of the increase was requested because of new acquisitions, namely wind turbines.

If the increase is approved, it would equal about $2.02 per month for an apartment, $5.14 for a small home, and $9.46 for a large home.

The utility maintains its rates are the lowest in the country, and one of the lowest in North America.

Public hearings will take place to allow discussion on the issue. The Energy Board will rule at the beginning of 2015.

Stop wasting monies. Were suppose to have the best power but with all these power shortages we are without electricity. We have a place in the adirondacks ny. Spent time there winter , summer and we never miss electricity...What's up with you guys... They pave the roads in the states and we look at each other and say Why are they paving the roads when they look better than ours...Maybe we should start having them pave our roads and subcontract our electricity... That should do it. Problem solved. We are simply fed up with your services..Then you want an increase lay off these executives and this should cover the monies needed.

@mp It's probably due to the fact that Hydro Quebec sells our surplus electricity to them at a cheaper rate then what we pay.....But they 'HAVE' to increase the rates rather increase the rates towards the states who are buying it from them!!

Every company in the world uses their profits to pay for investments in new technology and what not....Hydro Quebec increases prices to pay for it

And never have I come close to what Hydro Quebec says I should be paying more after an increase

Backdoor tax increase. Hydro will report record profits again next year, and the Govt. will quickly absorb the overflow.

Was it not in the news recently that Hydro had overcharged Quebecers to the tune of millions of dollars over the last few years? And that this money would not be refunded to customers? Well there's their raise, already paid in advance.

Why don't people realize that by a rate increase of a necessity, they can come out and say at election time...see we did not increase income tax! Well who owns Hydro Quebec? Duhhh!
