Projet Montreal has an alternative for the new proposed beach in Verdun.
Borough Mayor Jean-Francois Parenteau said he wants the beach to be at the Natatorium location in front of the Douglas Hospital.
Projet Montreal borough councillors along with party leader Richard Bergeron said creating a beach on initial site would be much more expensive than another site down river.
That location would be behind the Verdun Auditorium.
“Accessibility is key,” said councillor Sterling Downey. “Families need to have access to a beach, a beach should be about families and communities getting together.”
The party said their proposed location is a five minute walk from a metro station. The other location further west, a 10 minute bus ride from the closest metro.
The politicians also argued the mayor’s proposed site is on a former landfill, which would likely require decontamination.
Projet Montreal leader Richard Bergeron said the project is long overdue, and would bring immense value to the community.
“Montrealers need a beach to rediscover the pleasure of swimming in the river,” Bergeron said.
“First and foremost, we must guarantee public safety by locating the beach where the current poses no hazard. Accessibility, whether by foot, public transport, or car, infrastructure availability, and the river profile must all be taken into consideration,” he added in a statement.
The party hopes to have the beach created by 2017 at the latest.
