A 3-year-old girl drowned Saturday afternoon in the Rivière du Nord in Prévost in the Laurentians.
The Sûreté du Québec confirmed Saturday evening the girl had been pronounced dead in hospital.
Mélanie Dumaresq a spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec said police received a call by mid-day concerning a missing 3-year-old girl. She had been walking near the water with a family member moments before.
The girl was found unconcsious in the water. She was given CPR by medical staff on the scene and taken to hospital where she was in critical condition.
Dumaresq said an investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances surrounding the event.
The investigator will rule out any criminal negligence but Dumaresq said they are not ruling out the possibility that is an accident.
