The Surete du Quebec is looking for a new top cop.
Mario Laprise is stepping down — he'll be going back to a job at Hydro-Quebec, where he worked before the PQ appointed him to the SQ's top job in October of 2012.
He had three years left on his contract.
Public security minister Lise Theriault made the announcement this afternoon — she also announced she's setting up a committee to find a replacement.
While there is speculation that Laprise knew his days were numbered because of the Liberals' election in April, Theriault told a news conference in Quebec City this afternoon there was nothing political about the move, and that the decision to leave was Laprise's.
