Apartment building evacuated over fears of collapse

Firefighters suspect that improper renovation work is responsible for the partial collapse of a covered laneway at an apartment building on Cartier south of Sherbrooke this morning.

Six apartments in the building were evacuated shortly after 5:30 this morning after residents heard a loud crack.

One man said he thought it was an earthquake.

Several bricks have come loose and the area has been cordoned off.

Engineers will examine the building to determine the extent of the damage.

The building had been undergoing renovation and the work may have weakened the structure.

Reminds me of the buildings we used to live at in LaSalle. It was frightening! The owner just didn't care about the property.
