A call for a volunteer first responders service in Laval

The city of Laval is said to be looking into the situation following a proposal to create a volunteer first responders service.

The suggestion comes from such a volunteer who lives in Laval, but works in Cote St Luc.

Urgences Sante says its average response time in just over 7 minutes in both Laval and Montreal.

Emmanuel Stavrakakis is pushing for the all-volunteer first responder service.

"You administer oxygen, you immobilise the person if they fell, you control bleeding", Stavrakakis told CTV News.

He says it would cost 5-million dollars to buy trucks and equipment, plus 2-million to run the Laval service every year with roughly 3-hundred volunteers.

The city of Laval says it prefers is to train firefighters to be first responders.

Montreal firefighters are trained as first responders.
