Projet Montreal councillors each take out Bixi memberships

In a show of support for the troubled Bixi bike-sharing service, every council member belonging to the opposition Projet Montreal party has taken out a Bixi membership.

"While mayor Coderre is expressing doubts about the future of Bixi, Projet Montreal is taking some concrete action to ensure the self-serve bike system continues," party leader Richard Bergeron said in a statement.

Party officials hope other organizations follow their initiative.

The 2014 season is widely seen as a make-or-break season for the popular but perennially money-losing program. Earlier this week, Bixi board members announced the number of subscribers is down 7 per cent from last year, but they nonetheless expressed optimism that Bixi bikes would continue to roll through the streets of Montreal next year, and beyond.

Who paid for it? The councillor or the taxpayer?

No wonder ridership is down, we have had such a cold and rainy summer !
I am certain it will rebound next year if the weather is better.
