The city of Montreal announced it will use 24 hectares of land in the Bois-de-la-Roche agricultural park in Senneville to grow produce for Montrealers who live in poverty.
The project called Cultivating Hope, will partner with the social aid organization D-Trois-Pierres to grow the food on the land for five years.
The harvest will be split, with part going to community organizations that will distribute it to needy families. The rest will be sold to organic food wholesalers in order to raise funds to keep the project viable.
Réal Ménard, executive committee member in charge of sustainable development, environment, large parks and green spaces said the partnership with D-Trois-Pierres will offer new employment opportunities to those who find themselves excluded from the job market.
