The Egyptian parents of Canadian-born children are set to be deported tonight as a last-minute stay from the federal government looks increasingly unlikely.
Tarek and Samah Khalifa arrived in Canada eight years ago, and have since raised two daughters.
The decision they face now is whether to bring those daughters back to Egypt with them, or leave them with family here.
Mary Foster of Solidarity Across Borders says it is a heart-wrenching decision to force upon a family.
"One choice is tearing the family apart," she says. "The other choice is bringing them to a situation where they don't feel they'll even be able to provide basic security."
Many of the family's Verdun neighbours rallied to their support, sigining a peition demanding they be allowed to stay.
But supporters say they were unable to hand it to an official at Montreal's downtown immigration office.
