Egyptian couple to be deported tonight

The Egyptian parents of Canadian-born children are set to be deported tonight as a last-minute stay from the federal government looks increasingly unlikely.

Tarek and Samah Khalifa arrived in Canada eight years ago, and have since raised two daughters.

The decision they face now is whether to bring those daughters back to Egypt with them, or leave them with family here.

Mary Foster of Solidarity Across Borders says it is a heart-wrenching decision to force upon a family.

"One choice is tearing the family apart," she says. "The other choice is bringing them to a situation where they don't feel they'll even be able to provide basic security."

Many of the family's Verdun neighbours rallied to their support, sigining a peition demanding they be allowed to stay.

But supporters say they were unable to hand it to an official at Montreal's downtown immigration office.

What the hell is wrong with this gov't of ours. These Canadian born children deserve to have their parents here with them. Criminals and murderers get to stay here and these people have to tear their family apart. This county run by Steven Harper and the Conservative Party is going to hell in a hand basket !!

@fallenangel I am Egyptian and I can assure you that "basic security" in Egypt is guaranteed and not even a matter of question. Those people are abusing your system and using refugee claims as back door to PR.

Before people go attacking the Government for doing their job, I might remind you , who is responsible for creating this situation.
They knew from the start that this day would come, yet took the chance. Now be responsible for your own actions.Don't blame others. JMHO

This is unacceptable in our society. Two parents, both working, two young children and a rich country like ours can't keep them here as productive citizens? C'mon. Something wrong with our system.

Criminals should not be allowed to enter Canada in the first place..These people came here illegally and had children on our medicare and they knew this. How did they get here in the first place..When we need our health care system we can't get the service we paid for because these people are having babies. We see people in the corridors of our hospitals because they can't get a bed..
