Owner says he's been forced out by landlord in favour of Dollarama expansion

The owner of a popular bakery in N.D.G. is heartbroken.

D.A.D.'s Bagels, a landmark on Sherbrooke St. West for 20 years, is closing, pushed out by a nearby dollar store expansion.

71-year old Kashmir Randhawa says it wasn't his choice to leave.

His current lease has not been renewed.

"I have no option on the lease, and Dollarama is taking over the space, because they are bigger tenants in the building. It' a commercial lease, which I have no control."

Randhawa hopes to relocate in the same neighbourhood before Christmas, and wishes to thank all his loyal customers.

D.A.D.'s Bagels, on 5732 Sherbrooke St. near Wilson, will serve its last client at 10:30 tonight.

Time to boycott dollarama and anyone in this building for that matter.

DAD's Bagel is an institution and actually gives back to the community. When has Dollarama actually done anything for our neighborhood?

With Esposito's rat problems and now this, really makes me wonder if I want to stay in NDG for long.

Next step is for a Starbucks to replace the small cafes. Time to get OUT of NDG.

    Sad indeed.

The same story, same landlord, In April 2010, Microscott Workshop then located at 5718 Sherbrooke St. W. was informed after 12 years at that location that "the wrecking ball would be there in 3 weeks better start making plans". Four and a half years later and Dollarama is still at it . It's all about money. Good luck Kash. You did make a difference and NDG won't forget.

I understand the landlord is looking out for his own self interest but who the heck buys these crappy Made in China products that support child labor.

I never shop at Dollarama. It is a depressing place with nothing but cheap crap and trinkets made in China. How much of this junk do people really need?A sad mirror on society.

@steve Throw your money away and fill in landfills with this stuff. People should be more conscientious.

This is a terrible loss for central NDG, on several fronts! DAD's is a great place, always open, where you can get fresh , real food. Where else can you get bajis & bagels at any hour? The place is like a fantastic cross-section of the fab. food we have in MTL!! REAL bagels, amazing Indian food, knishes & croissants, empanadas ... all provided with warmth & smiles!!
And the WORST thing about this situation is that it is a forced closure for a dollar store expansion?!?!?! TERRIBLE!! I'll never set foot in it & I hope the owners realize what a mistake they are making before it's too late!!! If not...Hopefully they will loose more business than they thought they would make by evicting DAD's.
    NDG unite!!
