The Montreal fire department was called to the scene of an apartment fire in Riviere-des-Prairies late Monday night.
"The fire started on the second floor," said Jean Leblanc, chief of operations. "Some were evacuated before our arrival, 25 people were evacuated, two of them were evacuated by firefighters with a ladder."
The two-alarm blaze began in a second story apartment on Adrien Hébert street around 11:00 p.m.
One resident suffered an asthma attack during the fire, one firefighter was overcome by heat.
A number of residents have been taken in by the red cross.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
