The driver of a truck carrying dry cement escaped serious injuries Tuesday morning when he lost control of the vehicle after a collision on Highway 132 in Saint-Lambert sending it into the Seaway.

The driver managed to escape the vehicle and was rescued by passersby in a boat.

A Surete du Quebec spokesperson says the accident happened when the truck driver struck a motorhome and a compact car which had been stopped on the side of the road because of an accident minutes earlier.

Highway 132 westbound is down to one lane of traffic between the Victoria and Champlain bridges as workers try to fish the truck out of the Seaway. The truck will need to be emptied before it is removed. The SQ says the operation will take hours.

The cement was contained in the truck during the accident but a significant amount of diesel split into the Seaway.

Environment Quebec workers are on site evaluating the contamination.

The SQ spokesperson says the preliminary investigation found no criminal actions had been committed.

A woman who was sitting in the motorhome when it was hit is also in hospital with minor injuries.
