Attractions Hippiques suing Quebec

Quebec racetrack operator Attractions Hippiques is suing the Quebec government and its corporation that runs gaming and lotteries.

It says it had to cease operations over a month ago, blaming the Quebec government for cutting off VLT revenue and not providing requested concessions.

It says the Quebec government did not act reasonably and didn't follow through on what it calls "legitimate expectations" such as not hindering their efforts to relocate the Hippodrome de Montreal.

It's not known how much they're suing for: Attractions Hippiques says it's currently evaluating the losses it incurred and the profits it believes it lost.

SONACC, the provincial government racing agency,  had turned over Hippodrome de Montréal and three other Quebec tracks to Attractions Hippiques in the fall of 2006 after a government-appointed selection committee determined the company owned by Senator Paul Massicotte was the best of several bidders.

It had an operating loss of $16.2 million in its first full year of operation, entered creditor protection in its second year and remained there for 16 months, until October when it finally pulled the plug.

Attractions Hippiques employed about 300 people.
