Earth moves in parts of Laurentians
Fourth small earthquake in a week
A minor earthquake rattled the homes in parts of the Laurentians this morning.
This one comes on the heels of two small ones last weekend.
This morning's 3.3 magnitude quake hit near Brownsburg-Chatham, the tremors felt in nearby places such as Morin Heights, Val David and Prevost.
"Basically large enough to be felt as a strong shaking but certainly not large enough to cause any damage," says Stephen Halchuk, seismologist with Natural Resources Canada.
"We record about 100-150 earthquakes each year in the region," Halchuk tells CJAD News.
But only a dozen of them are enough to startle you and call 9-1-1.
Beaupré, northeast of Quebec City, and Buckingham near Ottawa were hit with similar small quakes last weekend. La Malbaie in the Charlevoix region northeast of Quebec City was also struck overnight with a minor earthquake.
So can we see bigger ones like the 5.9 magnitude quake that struck Turkey?
"They can happen, we could have a moderate sized earthquake in the region," Halchuk says.
Halchuk adds that these types of quakes happen every few hundred years.
