Office Québécois de la Langue Anglaise is born
You've heard of the French language police.
Now there's the English language police.
A new group called the Office Québécois de la Langue Anglaise has started up, billing itself as a non-profit group concerned about the slow disappearance of the English language in Quebec.
It promises to monitor businesses and lobby merchants to advertise in English and French as allowed by law. But it says it won't be picking up where Anglo rights activists like Alliance Quebec and Howard Galganov left off.
The non-profit grass roots group says it's recruiting members, asking for fees from 10 dollars up to a thousand dollars that it says will be used to promote the cause, including maintaining a website, www.oqla.org, e-newletters and ads. The three day old group says it has 250 members so far.
