Soldiers honoured with free rail service

QUEBEC CITY - Via Rail has found a special way of saying thank you to Canadian soldiers. For the month of July, the Crown corporation will be offering free and unlimited rail service for current and retired armed forces personnel.
Family members will also be given a discount.
Via Chairman Paul Cote says the move is part of the company's longstanding relationship with the forces, and a way of "recognizing their contribution.
In the past, the company has also provided veterans with free transportation to Remembrance Day Ceremonies in Ottawa.
Cote says the service is being provided during the month of July, because that is the month most soldiers are given for vacation.
He says a more permanent program could be considered.
Colonel Eric Tremblay, Commander of the 5th Mechanized Brigade of CFB Valcartier says the move is welcomed.
"It makes a difference for soldiers who have just returned from Afghanistan to know the country is behind them," he says.
Tremblay says more and more companies are finding ways to recognize soldiers, and are respectful of reservists who may take time off to serve.
He admits this type of measure also helps with recruitment.
Currently, the forces in Quebec are on a drive to find 500 reservists to help lighten the load for those serving in Afghanistan.
