Last day for Pointe St. Charles post office
Fri, 2008-03-28 16:46.
Despite months of lobbying and protests, residents in Pointe St. Charles have lost their fight to save the only post office in the neighbourhood. Today is the last day of operation for the post office on Grand Trunk, shutting down as part of Canada Post cutbacks. The new, downscaled version opens Monday on Bridge Street near the Victoria Bridge.
A final rally was held this afternoon with a march and demonstration outside the post office.
With hundreds of businesses and citizens' groups using services such as post office boxes and money order services, critics argue the new location is too inconvenient and won't serve the community properly, especially the elderly and folks with limited mobility.
But opponents vow to keep fighting to get it back in one form or another.
