United Nations halts aid shipments to Burma
Fri, 2008-05-09 09:17.
The United Nations is suspending shipments of emergency supplies to Burma because the military regime there is seizing the shipments as they arrive. The UN says all the food and equiment it airlifted into Burma has been confiscated, including 34 tonnes of high-energy biscuits. Huge numbers of people in that country are homeless after last weekend's cyclone and food and clean drinking water are very scarce. Burma has been telling the international community that it would accept aid but not the people who want to deliver it in-country. Canada, for example, has been told its DART team, which specializes in producing drinking water, is not welcome.
The UN says it is unprecedented that a nation accepts foreign aid but insists on distributing it itself.
