Students who make use of public transit to get to and from school will soon have a new transit card to carry that not only gives them discounts to ride the bus and metro but will help the various Montreal-area transit system save some money.

226-thousand students will soon be carrying the Opus Smart Cards which will given them fare discounts on public transit across the Montreal-area.

The cards cost $12.25 and are good for a year.

A benefit for the various transit systems is it will help cut down on user fraud since the card is personalized and non-transferrable.  Therefore, if it's reported lost or stolen, the card is blacklisted and can no longer be used.

Once the students get the hang of it, the MTC - along with their counterparts in Laval and Longueil -will start targetting adults and seniors with the smart cards.
