Denis Lortie walked into the assembly with a sub-machine and started shooting.

"There was a guy dressed in battle fatigues, with a beret on his head and knife on his belt," said a woman who worked for the Quebec city radio station CJRP, where he had dropped off a tape of death threats before the rampage.

Lortie opened fire on the receptionist as he walked into the building. "When Denis Lortie came charging in, he came in shooting," said Richard Guay, who was the speaker at the time.

The gunman then worked his way into the Salon Bleu, where politicians debate bills and hold question period. Few people were in the room at the time. In the end, Lortie shot 3 civil servants dead, and injured 13 other people.

The assembly now has metal detectors, and armed guards.

Today, a dozen of them held a minutes silence in front of the building.
