Police union says budget cuts undermine public safety.
Montreal police brotherhood president Yves Francoeur offers the example of a recent police operation, dubbed "Borax", involving the SQ, RCMP and Montreal police in a crackdown on marijuana. Francoeur says to avoid paying overtime, the Montreal force conducted its own raids an hour and a half after the other forces had begun theirs. By then, he says, most of the potential suspects knew Montreal police were coming, and went underground.
Montreal Executive Committee member Claude Dauphin, responsible for the police force, disdagrees that budget cuts have compromised poli ce work and public safety. Dauphin goes so far as to suggest that Brotherhood boss Francoeur cares more about scoring points for his union. Francoeur fires back that the city appears more interested in milking the public for parking ticket money.
