Quebec invests millions to bridge the gap between communities and cops
The Quebec government has announced an investment it hopes will help bridge the divide between Montrealers and their police force.
There is currently a program in place, in Montreal North, where community liaison workers work hand-in-hand with residents and police, bridging the gap between the two.
The government firmly believes in the success of the program which is why the province will invest more than $3 million over 3 years to bring it to seven other boroughs includingCote-des-Neiges/NDG and Lasalle.
The money will be used to hire more cops and more liaison workers as well as for town hall meetings and sporting events.
The city's point man on public safety, Claude Dauphin, says it's all about keeping kids off the streets and out of reach of street gangs.
"The more prevention you do, the more the criminality rate can be reduced."
Robints Paul, director of the Maison des Jeunes in Cote-des-Neiges, says it's a step in the right direction for the youth of the community.
"Any activities that will engage them, I think is a good step."
The liaison workers will be hires as soon as possible, according to the city.
