MARC TRESTMAN 'WINS THE DAY'
CFL COACH OF THE YEAR WINNER COMING UP ON THE RIC PETERSON SHOW
CJAD 1-ON-1 INTERVIEW AT 4:25

Marc Trestman is celebrating his Coach of the Year honour with a drive to Banff this afternoon.   Fitting because the Als' theme going into Grey Cup 2009 in Calgary was to strive for the Grey Cup atop a Rocky Mountain peak.

Trestman has led Montreal to the CFL's best record over the last two seasons with a 26-10-0 mark (their 15-3-0 record in 2009 was the best in franchise history), two East Division Championships, two Grey Cup appearances and one Grey Cup victory. The Als were undefeated at home in 2009, scoring at least 600 points for the second year in a row while allowing just 324 points against - a team record and the second lowest total by any team since the CFL moved to an 18-game schedule in 1986.

This marks the first time Trestman has won this award after being nominated in his first season in 2008. He was also named the CFLPA's Coach of the Year in both 2008 and 2009.

ALS LOSE ANOTHER D-STARTER TO CFL FREE AGENT SWEEPSTAKES
THE BC LIONS HAVE NOT YET CONFIRMED, BUT SOURCES TELL CJAD THE ALS HAVE LOST THEIR STARTING DEFENSIVE TACKLE KERON WILLIAMS.
The Als have now lost 2 starters to the Lions, including Davis Sanchez who was given Montreal's permission to pursue a deal with his hometown team.

CJAD SPORTS HAS LEARNED...K-WAT RETURNING
BUT ALS LOSING KEY DEFENSIVE STARTER

CJAD Sports is first to confirm the Als have a deal with Kerry Watkins to return in 2010.   In the hours before the CFL Free Agency Deadline, GM Jim Popp won Watkins' signature.   "K-Wat" as his teammates call him, is coming off his 5th straight season of 1,000-yards pass-catching.  He's scored 18 touchdowns the last 2 seasons under Head Coach Marc Trestman.

Keron Williams will be hard to replace on defense.   An inspired pass-rusher and a motivational guy in the locker-room, it was Williams who turned the Coach's mantra "Win the Day" into t-shirts many of the players wore throughout Grey Cup week, in some cases under their game-day jerseys at the 13th Man Miracle win over the Riders in Calgary.

Williams' replacement could be Jermaine McElveen who has re-signed.   The Als keep starting FB Kerry Carter as well, so the offensive peices from the 2009 Grey Cup champs, players and coaches, remain intact.

QB MENTOR TO AC, 'SWAC'-ATTACK MASTER TO HALL OF FAME
Alouettes stars Tracy Ham and Elfrid Payton are headed to the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2010.  Payton, a Hall of Fame smacktalker and practical joker, tells CJAD he's been quick to remind Ham of the time he sacked him 4 times in one game!  Elfrid Listen

CHIU BACK FOR AT LEAST ONE MORE YEAR Listen
Als' veteran centre Bryan Chiu has signed for 1 more year plus another season at the team's option.
That completes GM Jim Popp's job of keeping Anthony Calvillo's bodyguards together.  Chiu is among the Alouettes' alltime leaders in games played.

It completes a weekend when the Als also fended off the possible "Brain Drain" loss of "The O.C." Scott Milanovich.  The Als' Offensive Coordinator turned down an Argos' offer to be Head Coach in Toronto for 2010, instead signing a contract extension to serve with Marc Trestman's Als through 2012.

BARRON MILES MOVES INTO COACHING, WOULD LOVE TO RETURN TO MONTREAL
Having turned 38 on New Years' Day, Barron Miles admits he was tempted to come back for one more season.  But with CFL Coaching opportunity knocking, the former Alouettes allstar has made the jump.   He'll coach Lions safeties, while former Alouette and Lion teammate Mark Washington remains responsible for the BC cornerbacks and defensive halfbacks.  Listen
CJAD'S CFL SOURCES ALSO SUGGEST: the Als are inching closer to deals with starting fullback Kerry Carter and reserve RB/FB Dahrann Deidrick.
*But potential free agents Keron Williams (Dallas looked at him as a possible convert to linebacker but no contract has resulted) and Jermaine McElveen may be leaning toward testing free agency.
*Kerry Watkins tells CJAD he's just talked to his agent (Friday afternoon) and he's still talking with GM Jim Popp.   A deal BEFORE the free agency sweepstakes is still possible.
ALS GIVING UP FREE AGENCY, LAMBERT AND FERRI WANT REPEAT
THE ALS HAVE RE-SIGNED TWO MORE STARTERS WHO WANT TO REPEAT IN 2010.   Paul Lambert of the offensive line and linebacker Diamond Ferri forego their chance to auction off their services to other CFL teams.   Both players were key contributors to the Grey Cup run of 2009.
Lambert: Listen Ferri Listen
Chiu and Cahoon, who've both indicated they want to return, continue contract talks with GM Jim Popp, according to sources close to the team.

But there is still the risk that defensive tackle Keron Williams and/or d-lineman Jermaine McElveen will wait to try their hand at free agency sweepstakes.
POPP RE-SIGNS 2 CANADIANS, VERY CLOSE TO DEAL WITH PAUL LAMBERT
THE ALS TAKE 2 MORE STEPS TOWARD KEEPING THEIR GREY CUP CHAMPIONSHIPS CLUB TOGETHER FOR A SHOT AT A REPEAT.
First-round draft pick in 2006 Eric Deslauriers has re-signed as has backup d-lineman and special teams hitter Jeff Robertshaw: Listen

Deslauriers has been plagued by injuries throughout his career following a tryout with the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers in 2007.   He's scored only 1 TD on pass receptions in the CFL, and only 1 TD since his rookie season on a fumble recovery in 2009---ironically injuring himself on the play as he tumbled awkwardly into the endzone.

CALVILLO TAKES GREY CUP TO 2 HOSPITALS AND TO CRESCENT
Anthony Calvillo discreetly took the Grey Cup to the oncology floors at the Montreal Children's and Royal Victoria Hospitals on Thursday morning after his Wednesday night fundraising outing with the Cup at Winnie's on Crescent street. Calvillo was raising money for the Tony Proudfoot Fund.
TRESTMAN-RAIDERS RUMORS AGAIN
CJAD SOURCES SAY NO PERMISSION REQUESTED OR GRANTED TO TALK TO ALS COACH
BUT PERMISSION GRANTED TO ANOTHER CFL TEAM FOR 'THE O.C.'
CJAD SPORTS CONFIRMS
the Raiders have not asked the Alouettes for permission to talk to Marc Trestman about their head-coaching job...a job which is NOT currently open.   A San Francisco newspaper suggests Trestman and former New York Giants head coach Jim Fassel are on a list of candidates for Raiders owner Al Davis, who has not yet (?) fired Oakland head coach Tom Cable.

Several sources close to the Als suggest that folllowing December's contract extension through 2012, Trestman does NOT have an "NFL out-clause" and is expected to be with his Montreal coaching staff at next weekend's Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama scouting potential future Als.

The Alouettes have however granted permission to Winnipeg to talk to Scott Milanovich about the vacated Blue Bombers head-coaching job.
POPP EXPECTS CHIU BACK, BUT CFL SOURCES SAY IT COULD BE KERON OR J-MAC GOING FREE
Als GM Jim Popp trying to come up with an encore to signing pillars of his d-line and o-line, says he expects Bryan Chiu WILL return in 2010 along with Ben Cahoon.   But in reviewing his signings to date, Popp admits getting BOTH Keron Williams and Jermaine McElveen could be tough.   Those players are still looking for NFL opportunity, and there is CFL interest in several Als assistant coaches.

ALS RE-SIGN AC'S KEY BODYGUARD AND POTENTIAL FREE AGENT SACK-MASTER BOWMAN
The Alouettes have confirmed the re-signing of offensive tackle Jeff Perrett and defensive end John Bowman.   Perrett recently worked out with the NFL's Seahawks  but was not offered a contract.   Bowman was in the coach's doghouse in the Eastern Final but returned to action after a standout season and was solid in the Grey Cup win over Saskatchewan. Listen

Montreal Alouettes' Vice President and General Manager Jim Popp gets Bowman to commit for two years plus an option. Veteran offensive tackle Jeff Perrett has also extended his contract with the club through the 2012 season.  Call that "The Trestman Effect."

''We're happy to have both John and Jeff commit to stay with us for the long term. They have both been a major part of our recent success and will be keys to our future as well,'' Popp said. "These are two of the hardest-working and committed athletes both on and off the field."

Bowman started 18 games at defensive end in 2009 and was named to the East Division All-Star team after leading the CFL with 12 sacks and five forced fumbles, while finishing second on the Alouettes with five tackles for losses. He also recorded 34 defensive tackles and two special teams tackles.

Perrett started all of the Alouettes' 18 regular season games in 2009, as well as the playoffs and the Grey Cup for a second consecutive season. He was a key part of an offence that scored at least 600 points for a second straight season.

Bowman's re-signing could make end/tackle Jermaine McElveen consider testing free agency to win a starting job elsewhere though he's told CJAD he would be happy to return to Montreal.

DUVAL FINDS LITTLE NFL INTEREST, VIKINGS TASTE FOR  'BIG MC?'
NFL'S SEAHAWKS LIKE GREY CUP SHINE ON ALS LINEMEN, BUT NO DEALS
DAMON DUVAL CONFIRMS TO CJAD HE'S TRIED TO TEST NFL INTEREST IN HIS SERVICES.

BUT DUVAL TELLS CJAD THERE'S BEEN NO OFFERS YET AND HE'S PLANNING ON RETURNING TO MONTREAL SOON AND RESUMING HIS TRAINING FOR 2010 TRAINING CAMP FORT ST. JEAN.
D-LINEMAN JERMAINE MCELVEEN HAD A LOOK FROM THE VIKINGS AS WELL, and was at a Seahawks workout with Jeff Perrett as well as Chip Cox.   MCELVEEN says he'd be happy to come back to the Als but is not ruling out testing free agency.   GM Jim Popp has signalled interest in having the versatile McElveen back  but no contract offer has been given yet.

The Seattle Seahawks liked the Grey Cup glow on some Als talent.  Perrett tells CJAD he was the last of a long line of free agents given a look by Seahawks coach Jim Mora, but that was just before Mora's unceremonious firing by Seattle.   Perrett is heading home to Montreal soon and says he's more than happy and excited to return to the Als for a chance to repeat.   McElveen could be a free agent next month.   Jim Popp will have his challenges getting starter Keron Williams as well as McElveen to return.

BOWMAN, CHIU HEADLINE LIST OF POTENTIAL FREE AGENTS FOR GREY CUP CHAMPS
Montreal Alouettes GM Jim Popp will have a little work to do this off-season.
The Grey Cup champions have 12 players slated to become free agents Feb. 16, according to a list released Monday by the CFL.

Among the Alouettes players who could hit the free-agent market are veteran centre Bryan Chiu, receiver Kerry Watkins and defensive linemen John Bowman and Keron Williams.

The six-foot-two, 300-pound Chiu has spent his entire CFL career with Montreal since joining the club in 1997. The 35-year-old is an eight-time league all-star and has captured two Grey Cup titles.

Bowman (tied for CFL sacks lead with 12) and Williams (eight sacks) were big parts of a Montreal defence that was the CFL's best in 2009, and Waktins finished the season as the CFL's second-leading receiver with 81 catches for 1,243 yards and eight TDs.

According to the CFL, a total of 67 players are poised to become free agents next month should they not sign new deals with their current clubs. Included in that total, though, are eight players no longer in the CFL due to having been released, retired or signing with NFL teams last year when they entered the option year of their CFL deals.

CJAD SPORTS LEARNS THAT SJ GREEN FOLLOWS LARRY TAYLOR TO NFL
The Alouettes lose CFL kick-return TD leader from 2009 and CFL Award Winner Larry Taylor to the NFL "window of opportunity".   Some sources had suggested to CJAD SJ Green could have been even more sought-after in the eyes of NFL scouts.   Green is still young and has offensive talent and as is a must for NFL prospects from the CFL, can excel on special teams play.

The Jets/Als connection is a close one, as Etienne Boulay and DJ Johnson have left the Als in recent years to try to win jobs in New York.

PRESIDENT SMITH SAYS TRESTMAN IS STAYING WITH ALS

It has taken a 3-year deal in a 3-down league in a foreign country to put Marc Trestman on the NFL head coaching radar, but President of the Alouettes Larry Smith tells CJAD that Trestman is only focused on the playoffs right now and clearly has committed to the Alouettes for next season with no escape clause in his deal not even for an NFL head coaching job.

Coach Trestman has told CJAD previously that he has been mystified why he was never offered an NFL head coaching job in the past, but his no escape clause was at the insistence of Als owner Robert Wetenhall to ensure the Als have the man they want on the sidelines for the 2010 debut of the expanded Molson Stadium.   Sources tell CJAD Mr. Wetenhall will have no interest in talking about a buyout no matter what the NFL compensation offered.

Hey Als fans, don't feel like the NFL is trying to rob you.  Take it as the highest compliment.   Besides, last time an Als Head Coach jumped directly back to the NFL for a top sideline job:  Marv Levy...right after a Grey Cup win!

POPP SAYS HE EXPECTS TRESTMAN TO STAY DESPITE NFL RUMOURS
Montreal Alouettes head coach Marc Trestman is too busy preparing for Sunday's East Division final against the B.C. Lions to worry about rumours concerning his possible move to the NFL.

But Trestman's boss, general manager Jim Popp, said Thursday he doesn't see his prized head coach going anywhere.

``I don't personally feel that Marc is searching to go to the NFL,'' Popp told The Canadian Press. ``But because of the success he's had, his name is obviously going to pop up.''

Trestman's name was among four mentioned Wednesday in an ESPN report concerning potential successors for recently fired Buffalo Bills head coach Dick Jauron. The report stated Trestman was ``on the Bills' radar'' without getting into specifics.

Popp questions where the news may have originated, speculating it could have ``come from Canada and someone who wants to create some conflict'' on the Alouettes heading into Sunday's big game.

But ultimately, Popp said he is not overly concerned about losing Trestman.

``Does he deserve to have his name thrown in? Absolutely,'' Popp said. ``Is it a feather in this organization's cap? Absolutely. But do I expect him to be going anywhere? No. He's happy where he is. To me, this is just a rumour.''

Popp wouldn't discuss any details of Trestman's contract, saying only that ``bottom line, he's under contract to our team.''

Trestman briefly addressed the report after the Alouettes workout Thursday.

``I think that any time your team has success, there are going to be people coming out of that team who are going to be visible and that are going to be written about,'' he said. ``But I'm not going to comment on any of those stories.''

Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo said he hadn't heard about the report until a reporter asked him about it Thursday, but he doesn't feel it will be a distraction to the team as it makes final preparations for Sunday's game.

``Marc's an excellent coach and we want him to be here, but I'm sure he's focusing on the next two games and we're going to try to do the same thing,'' Calvillo said. ``Whatever the distractions have been, I think our team has done a great job of focusing on the game at hand.''

Trestman has a long history in the NFL, serving as offensive co-ordinator in Cleveland, San Francisco, Arizona and Oakland. He was a consultant with the New Orleans Saints when the Alouettes offered him the head coaching job in 2007.

Many around the CFL questioned the wisdom of hiring a coach with no experience in the Canadian game. But Trestman swiftly put those doubts to rest, leading Montreal to an 11-7 record last year and a Grey Cup appearance.

This year has been even better with a franchise-record 15-3 mark, and to a man the Alouettes say they have all bought into Trestman's team motto to ``Win the Day.''

Calvillo said it is that short-sighted focus that has allowed the Als to avoid a dip in intensity after clinching first place in the East Division way back in Week 14.

``When we clinched it there wasn't much talk about it,'' Calvillo said. ``We wanted to go out there and compete at the same level we were doing before we clinched. It wasn't like we could just sit back and relax, we were going to keep focusing on what we needed to do. The guys bought into that and it's helped us out.''

Popp says it is that ability to communicate a message and then getting the players to believe in it sets Trestman apart as a coach. ``As a public speaker, he's a guy who captures your attention,'' Popp said. ``When you're a new coach I think that's very important, because you can grasp the players a lot quicker.''

Popp is clearly hoping Trestman doesn't become a new coach again any time soon.

After dominating the CFL during the regular season, the Montreal Alouettes dominated the East Division all-star selections.  The Alouettes, who posted a CFL-best 15-3 record, led all teams with 17 selections. Voting was conducted by members of the Football Reporters of Canada, CFL head coaches and fans.

Quarterback Anthony Calvillo, the CFL's outstanding player last year and a nominee for the award in 2009, led the way for Montreal on offence. Joining him were running back Avon Cobourne, receivers Ben Cahoon, Kerry Watkins and Jamel Richardson, centre Bryan Chiu, guard Scott Flory and tackle Josh Bourke.

Hamilton tackle Dan Goodspeed and receiver Arland Bruce III along with Winnipeg running back Fred Reid and offensive lineman Brendon LaBatte captured the other spots on offence.

Montreal sported the CFL's top-ranked defence and placed six players on the unit, including tackle Keron Williams, ends Anwar Stewart and John Bowman, linebacker Chip Cox, cornerback Mark Estelle and safety Mathieu Proulx.

Winnipeg had three players voted on to the defensive team: cornerback Jovon Johnson and defensive backs Lenny Walls and Jonathan Hefney. Also joining them were Hamilton linebackers Jamall Johnson and Markeith Knowlton.

Montreal swept the special-team nominations with Damon Duval capturing both the kicker and punter's positions. Larry Taylor claimed the special-teams spot.

The Toronto Argonauts were shut out.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders placed a team-high nine players on the West Division squad, not a surprise considering their first-place finish. But what was surprising was Riders quarterback Darian Durant getting the nod ahead of CFL passing leader Ricky Ray of Edmonton (4,916 yards) and Calgary's Henry Burris (4,896 yards), who was second overall. Durant finished fourth with 4,348 yards.

Other Riders named as all-stars included receiver Weston Dressler, tackle Gene Makowsky, centre Jeremy O'Day, defensive end Stevie Baggs, defensive tackle John Chick, linebackers Tad Kornegay and Sean Lucas and defensive back Lance Frazier.

CFL rushing leader Joffrey Reynolds (1,496 yards) topped the eight Calgary Stampeders named to the squad. Joining him are receiver Jeremaine Copeland, tackle Ben Archibald, guard Dimitri Tsoumpas, cornerbacks Dwight Anderson and Brandon Browner, kicker Sandro DeAngelis and punter Burke Dales.

Veteran receiver Geroy Simon was among seven B.C. Lions named. Rookie running back Martell Mallett, defensive tackle Aaron Hunt, linebacker Anton McKenzie, defensive back Korey Banks, special-teams dynamo Jason Arakgi and safety Barron Simpson, who led the CFL in interceptions, were the others.

CFL receiving leader Fred Stamps (85 catches, 1,402 yards, eight TDs) topped the three Edmonton Eskimos selected. Tackle Calvin Armstrong and defensive tackle Dario Romers were the others voted on to the squad.

CALVILLO UNANIMOUS NOMINEE FOR CFL OUTSTANDING PLAYER AWARD, 'USUAL SUSPECTS' CAHOON, FLORY, STEWART WIN ALOUETTES HONOURS
Anthony Calvillo, Ben Cahoon and Anwar Stewart may have busy agendas for Grey Cup week.  They have won Montreal honours as nominees for CFL Awards.   Calvillo is a unanimous selection for Most Outstanding Player, Cahoon for Outstanding Canadian and Stewart for top defensive player.

Calvillo beat Calgary QB Henry Burris only to be outdueled in the 2nd half by Burris who whined about AC's MOP victory the Thursday before Montreal's Grey Cup game.   This season the Grey Cup is in Calgary and AC would certainly welcome the opportunity for a duel against Burris again.

Flory is named again as Als nominee for top Lineman, Larry Taylor as Special Teams player o the Year, Stewart for top Defensive honours, and Jerald Brown for Rookie of the Year.

ALS 48 BOMBERS 13
Anthony Calvillo threw touchdown passes to Brian Bratton and Andrew Hawkins as the Montreal Alouettes downed the listless Winnipeg Blue Bombers 48-13 on Sunday for a team record-tying 14th win of the season.  Marc Trestman's Alouettes (14-3) equalled their win total set in 2004 under former coach Don Matthews and went undefeated at home at 9-0. They have a chance for a franchise-record 15th victory when they close the regular season Saturday in Toronto.

Larry Taylor scored on a 115-yard missed field goal return, Avon Cobourne ran in his 15th TD of the season and Damon Duval added six field goals.

Titus Ryan had a TD catch and Alexis Serna booted two field goals for the Blue Bombers (7-10), who can finish second in the East Division with a win over Hamilton (8-9) next weekend.

The Bombers got a break when Taylor fumbled the opening kickoff and Derrick Doggett recovered at the Montreal 18-yard line but had to settle for a field goal.

The Alouettes bounced back with a Duval field goal followed by a drive capped by a 24-yard TD pass to Bratton. Montreal got five more points off a safety and a 27-yard Duval field goal in the quarter.

Hawkins caught a 19-yard scoring pass 11:01 into the second and Serna answered with a 40-yard field goal for a 25-6 Montreal half-time lead.

Fred Reid was held to one yard on six carries and Michael Bishop passed for only 53 yards in the first half.

Bishop more than doubled that only 21 seconds into the second half when he found Ryan behind the Montreal defence for a 65-yard TD pass.

The Alouettes hit back with a Duval kick and, when Serna's 46-yard attempt fell short, Taylor brought it back for the third-longest return TD in Alouettes history.

Duval got his fifth and sixth field goals of the day in the fourth to give him 48 for the season, three short of his career high set in 2006. His 22 kicking points gave him a career-high 218, only two points short of Terry Baker's club record set in 2000.

Adrian McPherson was at quarterback when Cobourne scored on a 14-yard run in the fourth.

Bishop came out in favour of Casey Bramlet five minutes into the final quarter. He was picked off by Billy Parker to set up a Duval field goal.

A.C. finishes with 232 yards through the air and two TD passes.  Backup Adrian McPherson came in and performed well, hitting on 10 of 11 passes for 110 yards.  He also engineered what proved to be the winning touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter to seal the deal against a stubborn Hamilton team that generated more than 500 yards through the air. That hasn't happened since Calvillo did it, as a member of the Ticats, some 15 years ago!!!

EMRY: "I'M NOT A DIRTY PLAYER", CFL FINES HIM FOR HIT ON FORMER AL
The CFL has fined linebacker Shea Emry an undisclosed amount for his illegal hit in the Alouettes 33-14 win over Winnipeg on Sunday.  Edwards was knocked motionless for a moment on the field, finally walking off and heading right to the trainers' room for concussion diagnostic tests.
Emry says he won't let the case be a distraction before the Ti-Cats game in Hamilton and in fact says he can use it as "fuel to the fire". Listen
Coach Trestman refused to comment directly on the penalty of his second-year player (in his first season as starting middle linebacker) but says he is NOT concerned about Emry getting a reputation as a dirty player. Listen

ALS 'DOOM IN THE DOME' LOSS UNDER PROTEST, LAMBERT OUT SEVERAL WEEKS
CJAD SPORTS HAS LEARNED THE ALOUETTES WILL FILE A FORMAL PROTEST TO THE CFL OVER THEIR 19-12 LOSS TO THE LIONS, their 9th straight year of losing under the BC Place Stadium dome.
Sources tell CJAD the Als will argue that the play was never whistled down when Avon Cobourne ran untouched to the BC endzone.   That would have given Coach Trestman a chance to go for 2-point conversion and steal a win, or kick the convert and force a possible overtime shootout.

Paul Lambert injured his left foot during the frustrating sequence.   He had to be carried off the field by two of his teammates.   An MRI will confirm the extent of the damage.
Expect Luc Brodeur-Jourdain to fill the gap at left guard and for highly-coveted rookie Andrew Woodruffe to make his CFL regular season debut Sunday afternoon on CJAD 800.

Facing a third-and-one, Montreal gambled. The Lions looked to have stopped them short, but the referee said B.C. had called a time out before the play started.  On the next play, Avon Cobourne ran around the left side for an apparent touchdown. There was a flag on the field, and the referee ruled the play would not stand because not enough time had been put back on the clock after the time-out call.
On Montreal's third try, Cobourne was stopped short and the ball was turned over on downs.

SAM ETCHEVERRY REMEMBERED AT ST-PATRICK'S
Over 200 mourners turned out to St. Patrick's Basilica to pay their respects to Sam Etcheverry -- the legendary quarterback for the Montreal Alouettes in the 1950s. The Rifle as he was nicknamed -- was as big a star to Montreal fans in his day as hockey greats Rocket Richard or Jean Beliveau.
Alouettes president Larry Smith says one reason the New Mexico native was so popular was that he chose to settle in the city after his playing career was over. Smith adds that Etcheverry was an innovator, who threw the ball often while other teams stuck to the running game.

Sam Etcheverry's #92 and Pierre Desjardins #63 are two of eight jerseys retired by the Als.

An offensive lineman for Montreal from 1966 to '71, Desjardins won a Grey Cup under Etcheverry in his first year as the Als head coach.Listen to Sam Etcheverry tributes from Smith, Desjardins and Buono (the last one via a report from CJAD's Rick Moffat -- the voice of the Als)

CJAD EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE CANADIAN FOOTBALL HALL OF FAMER ON THE TWISTS OF FATE THAT BROUGHT HIM TO MONTREAL, HIS CONTROVERSIAL DEPARTURE AND HIS STARTLING COMEBACK AS A GREY CUP CHAMPION COACH Listen
It is with great sadness that the Montreal Alouettes and the Etcheverry family announce the passing of legendary quarterback and coach Sam "The Rifle" Etcheverry. Sam passed away Saturday morning at the age of 79 following a long battle with cancer.

Alouettes President Larry Smith sums up Etcheverry's contribution to football in Montreal during the 1950's and also touches on a fitting reunion during Grey Cup week in Montreal last November when #92's favourite target, Als Hall of Fame wide receiver Hal Patterson's #75 was retired.Listen

Also, here is a sampling of what those who knew Etcheverry the best had to say
about him: Patterson, Hall of Fame Alouettes tight-end Peter Dalla Riva and Etcheverry's apprentice in the brokerage business, ex-Als fullback Michael Soles.Listen

One of the most remarkable players in team history, Sam "The Rifle" Etcheverry quarterbacked the Alouettes from 1952 to 1960, setting virtually every team passing record. He totalled 30,303 yards and 186 touchdowns on 1,969 completions.

He led the Als to the 1954, 1955 and 1956 Grey Cups and won the 1954 Schenley Award as the Canadian Football League's best player. In 1956, he became the first quarterback in CFL history to reach 4,000 passing yards in a season.

A six-time All-Star, Etcheverry came back to the Als in 1970 as head coach, leading the team to a Grey Cup win over the Calgary Stampeders. His number 92 jersey has been retired by the Alouettes in 1996. Etcheverry was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame on Nov. 28, 1969.

CALVILLO THROWS 4 TD PASSES IN ALS 39-12 WIN OVER BLUE BOMBERS

Three consecutive passes the Montreal Alouettes quarterback threw in the first half of his team's 39-12 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Saturday night ended in touchdowns.

``Somebody mentioned that to me out there,'' said Calvillo, who threw four TD passes in the game. ``I didn't realize that and they asked me if it's ever been done or if I'd done it before and I can't recall.''

The three straight TDs were notched by S.J. Green, Kerry Watkins and Kerry Carter, while Jamal Richardson caught another in the third quarter.

Rush end Anwar Stewart said the Montreal Alouettes' defence didn't let itself think about shutting out the Toronto Argonauts, even as time wound down on a 25-0 victory on Friday night.

The Alouettes sacked quarterbacks Kerry Joseph and Cody Pickett a total of seven times, held tailback Jamal Robertson to 20 yards on six carries and gave up only 126 yards in net offence to the struggling Argonauts attack, but still the zero didn't sink in until it was over.

``We just wanted to play hard,'' Stewart said after the Alouettes posted their first shutout in 33 years. ``We knew that if we came out after Joseph and stopped the run we had a chance to do good things.

``We didn't really think about the goose-egg, but you know what? We'll take it. It's a great bounce-back from last week and we're proud of what we did. Last week we didn't touch (Eskimos quarterback) Ricky Ray and this week, we really got at them and showed what we can do.''

Defensive tackle Eric Wilson scored his first career touchdown on a one-yard catch from backup quarterback Adrian McPherson and tailback Avon Cobourne ran in two scores in the thorough whipping of the East Division-rival Argonauts, who are now 2-4.Listen to Als TD montage and final gun

The sellout crowd of 20,202 at Percival Molson Stadium had little to cheer for during long stretches of a mostly uneventful game other than the defence, which blanked an opponent for the first time since Montreal beat Toronto 28-0 at Olympic Stadium on September 5, 1976. The Argonauts were shut out for the first time since losing 31-0 at home to Calgary on Sept. 13, 1992.

Montreal slotback Ben Cahoon caught eight passes for 103 yards to put him past the 12,000 mark in career receiving yards. He also passed former Argonaut Derrell Mitchell for seventh place all-time in that category.Listen

Cahoon, never the fastest receiver, called his career ``a classic tortoise-and-the-hare story,'' but otherwise preferred to talk about the team's victory. ``It's just awesome,'' he said. ``I don't think it will affect anything. It was just a great night for us.''

CALVILLO MOVES PAST LANCASTER INTO 2ND ON CFL's ALL-TIME TD PASS LIST AS
ALS TAME TI-CATS 21-8 ON THE MOUNTAIN TO STAY UNBEATEN
The Montreal Alouettes remain undefeated, but now they know they have a dangerous rival in the CFL East Division in the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Anthony Calvillo passed for 404 yards with touchdown tosses to Jamel Richardson and Brian Bratton to lead the Alouettes to a 21-8 victory over the Tiger-Cats that was closer than the score indicated on Thursday night.

The TD passes gave Calvilllo 335 in his career, moving past Saskatchewan great Ron Lancaster into second place all-time behind Damon Allen, who had 394 in 23 seasons. His 48-yard TD toss to Richardson in the second quarter got the milestone and earned a standing ovation from the sellout crowd of 20,202.Listen

BOWMAN YOGA-SACKMASTER PROMISES UNIQUE CELEBRATION

CJAD's Rick Moffat and 2002 Grey Cup Champion Ed Phillion discuss the Als' win in Regina

Anthony Calvillo tells CJAD's Rick Moffat coming to Montreal back in 1998 was the toughest decision he ever made in pro football.   Now AC is set to match or surpass another Hall of Fame legend in Ronnie Lancaster's old playground, a place that Calvillo once seriously considered making HIS football home.

The year was 1998 and Jim Popp was trying to swing a trade for the TiCats' battered QB.  The deal fell through, the Cats cut Anthony to avoid paying out a bonus they'd owe him and Popp won over AC to the idea of regrouping and rebuilding behind the mentoring of Tracy Ham and the CFL's elite bodyguards along the Montreal o-line.

Calvillo says turning down the Roughriders and a chance to keep his starting status (the Argos were also wooing the former Las Vegas Posse gunslinger) was his professional crossroads.   He feared another struggling year and he'd be bounced right out of pro football.

Current Als scout Al Ford was the man trying to convince AC to go West.  On the eve of Calvillo's shot at passing Lancaster, (all it will take is 3 TD passes so hear the moment live on CJAD) Ford was watching the East L.A.-native warm up: "I think Ronnie was more outgoing but like Anthony...he made the players around him better.  And he never called out a guy who missed a block or an assignment," Ford said of Calvillo and his former 1966 Grey Cup teammate "The Little General."
Calvillo at 2-0 to start the season against the 2-0 Roughriders.   Only on CJAD 800.

Larry Taylor - Special Teams Player of the Week
For a second-straight week, a member of the Montreal Alouettes has taken top honours for his special teams play, with kick returner Larry Taylor being named the CFL's Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 2.  Taylor scored an 86-yard punt return touchdown in the Alouettes' 50-16 win over the Eskimos, extending the home team's lead to 25 points. He finished the game with 180 combined yards, including 128 on six punt returns and 33 on two kickoff returns.

Quarterback Anthony Calvillo and defensive tackle Keron Williams were runners up for offensive & defensive honours, respectively.

FROM REALITY TV TO ALS CAMP---NFL COWBOYS PROSPECT
ARRIVES AT FORT ST. JEAN
The Montreal Alouettes have never shied about from prospects with unique career paths.  Andrew Hawkins is just more unique than most.   The former Toledo Rocket at the college level is fresh off starring in the Dallas Cowboys' and Spike TV's "4th & Long" reality tv series.
Michael Irvin stars on the show that promises 1 of 12 tryout players an NFL training camp invite in Texas this fall.   How does Hawkins do in the show?  What's he doing here with the Als if he's rubbing shoulders with the Cowboys' crowd?   Listen

MARCUS BRADY ROOKIE AGAIN
AVON COBOURNE ADMITS HE'S NOT IN GAME SHAPE YET, BUT VOWS HE CAN HIT YEAR 2-K
ALS ROOKIE HOPEFUL GETS MENTORING FROM FORMER EXPOS OUTFIELDER

Former Als quarterback Marcus Brady says he's adjusting well to being a rookie again.  The backup quarterback is now Als' receiver coach.   So can he teach Ben Cahoon how to have blazing speed?  "I have a great relationship with the reciever corps and Coach Trestman," smiles Brady, who welcomed a new addition to the family over the offseason.

Avon Cobourne admits he could not do his usual running regimen in the offseason and he's not content with where his fitness level is right now.  But Cobourne predicts he's still aiming for 1,000 yards on the ground AND through the air---that would be a CFL first.  Cobourne got married in Jamaica last month.

Jay Staggs of the Als says he's already got a list of eateries to hit in Montreal suggested by his cousin Ryan, an outfielder formerly with the Expos, Nationals and then the Mets.   Staggs says Ryan Church has been like a mentor for him.   Staggs, a former Chicago Bears' tryout is hoping to win a job as a linebacker with the Als.

FORMER NOTRE DAME CAPTAIN MAKES BIG IMPRESSION
PROULX CONFESSES: HE'D LOVE TO TACKLE SOME OF HIS OFF-SEASON LEGAL ADVERSARIES
DUVAL: KICKING COMPETITION COULD COME FROM 2-1/2 YEAR OLD SON

Als Camp Day 3: Darrell Campbell continues to draw attention for his solid work at the defensive tackle spot.   He's bulked up from 295 to 320 or so and is still moving well.   The former Notre Dame captain will have to keep it up to join forces with CFL veterans like Keron Williams and Jerome Heywood.

Mathieu Proulx says he's thrilled to put the legal briefs behind him and go back to "x's and o's" for a while.   Proulx has been promised a job again after this season by the firm of Brassard-Melancon-Forget.   Proulx confesses to CJAD he would have loved to try the "Office Linebacker" approach to law and tackle some of his opponents ("stay away from the judges," jokes Proulx).

Damon Duval revealing more of his weight loss secrets as the Als' biggest loser (13 pounds leaner this season) says he's thankful Rob Bironas of the Titans shared his workout advice---Duval stole his job back in their college days at Auburn!   Duval says he's used to flying solo without another kicker around at camp but points out his 2-1/2 year old son is showing a natural aptitude for the kicking tee.

ALS CAMP: PLAYERS WARNED BY TRESTMAN---THIS CAMP WILL BE TOUGHER THAN THE LAST
CAHOON: 'CALVILLO WILL PLAY LONGER THAN ME'
HEYWOOD'S REMARKABLE OFF-SEASON INSPIRATION
LESS IS MORE, UNLESS MORE IS MORE
PROUDFOOT IN DEEP

They huffed and puffed through a very public Day 1 with adoring fans cheering them on through what veterans said was the toughest first Training Camp opener they'd ever been through.   Then on Day 2 Marc Trestman had the players braced for contact with shoulder pads and another intense two-a-day practise session.   Trestman shows every indication of living up to his words of warning to his players...this camp will be tougher than last years.

Alouettes players confirmed to CJAD they recieved letters a few weeks ago with forewarning that last year's gruelling introduction to the Trestman Way was just a beginning.  The letter stated this camp would be tougher.   And the consensus after just 2 days is...Trestman backs up his words.

Trestman drilled the theme "EVERYTHING MATTERS" into the players' helmets in 2008.  This year, the mantra from the former NFL veteran coaching guru is "WIN THE DAY".  And Adrian McPherson appears to be doing that--throwing the ball extremely well and in the battle for practise time, seems to have solidified his hold as #2 QB

*BEN CAHOON says he intensified some things in his off-season workout program that he hopes will give him better bursts on pass routes and help him push off the jamming moves from defensive backs.
Cahoon continues to claim he'll be retired before Anthony Calvillo, but we all know they'll be saying that at the age of 45.

*Defensive tackle Jerome Heywood is back for his 2nd tour of duty as an Alouette and went back to his 2nd-career in the offseason for inspiration.  In San Diego, Heywood works with "at risk" youth.   That means "high-risk" young offenders.   Heywood tells CJAD he identifies with many of the kids he's working with:  "I just never got caught with some of the things I've done...I had good guidance that 'you might not want to do that' and listened when some people close to me suggested I stop."

*Is Less more or is More more?  Joel Wright's bulked up with 8 pounds of extra muscle to compete for a linebacker job and special teams grunt work.  Anthony Calvillo and Jermaine McElveen have slimmed down about 10 pounds each.   But the Als' "BIGGEST LOSER" could be Damon Duval who has shed 13 pounds on a program recommended by his buddy Rob Bironas,  the kicker for the NFL'S Tennessee Titans.

Former Grey Cup hero Tony Proudfoot, back blogging for another season on CJAD.com, is back
as a coaching consultant for Marc Trestman for the 2nd straight season.  On Day 2 Trestman says Proudfoot, robbed of his voice by Lou Gehrig's Disease, is still communicating with the other coaches and having valuable input.

ALS SACK-MASTER TO ASSUME THE LOTUS POSITION?

Alouettes defensive star Anwar Stewart has bulked up with more muscle but added a unique zen approach to his off-season training.  With less than a month to go to Alouettes Training Camp, Stewart is raving about adding 6 more pounds of muscle and improved flexibility and balance because of a yoga workout routine.

"I left sacks out there on the field," Stewart says of the 2008 campaign that ended in heartache on the field at Olympic Stadium in the Grey Cup loss to the Stampeders.

"I haven't even looked at the tapes of that game," admits the veteran defensive end.  Stewart has looked over other game footage and believes his yoga regimen will boost his quarterback-hunting.
